Montefiore Health System’s plan to close Mount Vernon Hospital and replace it with an outpatient facility is under attack by the nurses’ union, community leaders and elected officials.
A growing campaign to keep the hospital open has urged Gov. Andrew Cuomo to reject Bronx-based Montefiore’s push for a new emergency department and ambulatory care center to serve the Mount Vernon community.
Montefiore requires state approval to close Mount Vernon Hospital and use a $41 million state grant to pay for constructing the replacement facility, which involves renovating the four-story building at 250 East Sandford Boulevard. A key state Department of Health panel is reviewing the request.
Central to the opposition are concerns about the reduction in medical services for a community with a large population of poor and minority patients.
